Will GM36 standalone with effect board?

Post by Jacksc5 on Mon Aug 17, 2015 2:35 pm

I'm not happy with my multi effects (line6 fire hawk) and wanted to know if the GM 36 would be enough on its own? I play in a covers band mainly playing rock/indie rock and the odd bit of cheesy pop.
I currently have TM18 but thinking should I go GM36 and ditch mfx or TM36 and try a different board?
    Thanks

I guess it really depends on what kind of sounds you`ll need from it. The GM36 is a great amp with a whole plethora of tones to be had, and more importantly, the ability to save and recall those tones at will. Are the built in effects world class? No. Does it really make that much of a difference? No. With the right controller this amp is extremely versatile, which is why I got it. I use it paired with an Eventide H9 and get every tone I could ever use with the combination. Could it be enough for you? Absolutely. Will it be? That`s up to you Smile

Thanks for this. Is the H9 in effects loop?

Yep, H9 is in the loop. The midi programming was easier to have the loop switch on and off with the presets that needed it or not than it was to have the H9 active or bypassed. The short version for me is like this: I use the built in delay for rhythm tones, the H9 delay for lead, built in chorus for subtle clean sounds and the H9 for more of a sound effect depth chorus. I don`t use phaser or tremolo often enough to have it in use, and of course the H9 handles all of the pitch shift/harmony effects (and with those I use the built in delay because the H9 doesn`t do two algorithms at once, so if I`m using a harmonizer I can`t also use the H9 delays). I use the Behringer FCB1010 midi controller and it controls the amp and H9 simultaneously. When I switch to a given preset on the amp it also switches the H9 to the corresponding preset (sounds complicated but it was incredibly easy. I`m no midi guru by any stretch of the imagination). I`ve got it worked out to where bank 1 (1 -10) are my "normal" guitar sounds for typical rock band stuff. Banks 2 and 3 (1 - 10 on both) are more sound effect-ish for my Satriani/Buckethead styled pieces.

I`m really quite the minimalist and didnt want to lug around a bunch of crap to get the sounds I wanted, not to mention I didn`t want to be forced into having a completely foreign tone if something in the signal path failed during a show and I had to play without it. I can make do as long as the tone is predictable Smile

The GM36 effects will cover most classic rock effects. If you want to get experimental, look else where.

One small thing to bear in mind: he built in FX are post loop, so if you are using something like a Ditto looper and set a nice clean chorused tone to noodle over, when you flip to your non-chorused lead tone, you also lose the chorus on the loop as well.

It's quite minor but remarkably annoying.

Can you stack the GM36 modulation effects? So have both shorus and tremelo on together?

I control my GM36 with a Boss GT100 so effects wise only really use the GM36 reverb and delay. Everything else I use the Boss for.

    Nope.

Seems like a bit of a shortcoming perhaps but even TC Electronic's famed G-System does not allow more than 1 modulation effect at a time.

With GM36 you can do reverb, one effect, and delay simultaneously. I think due to the midi control and wonderful tube features, H&K controlled the price with a "limited" effects processor.

Would you really want to add two out of the Chorus, Phaser, Flanger Tremolo effects at the same time?

I use a slight chorus with a phaser for one particular song in my cover band.

When I do some casino gigs, I only use the Grandmeister. I leave the rack home. The fx are good enough to gig with. I prefer my G Major of course, but the GM fx work.
