    OD pedals w/ GM36? Empty OD pedals w/ GM36?

Post by gravydb Tue May 12, 2015 8:37 am

I've noticed a lot of folks are hitting the front of their GM with an overdrive pedal... it's something I'd like to look into...

Can you tell me what your experience has been with this? Why are you using one? Which pedals have you tried? Which pedal have you settled on? When do you use it (is it always on, or is it situational, IE as a boost etc)?

    Thanks for your input!

The four channels are uniquely voiced. Often I'll dial in a tone I like on the Crunch channel, but want just a little more oomph. I usually can't dial in that same tone on the Lead channel, so I just add a little solid state distortion. Plus, there is something synergistic about a little solid state distortion added to a lightly saturated tube amp. Every hit a JCM800 with a Tube Screamer? Or actually you NEED at TS with a non-master Plexi.
I use a Line6 HD500X for MIDI control of the GM and for input side effects. I don't use 4CM as the GM effects are good enough for 70s rock. HD500x effects I use are noise gate, wah, volume pedal, EQ, and ... sometimes light solid state distortion. I use the two least distorted effects in the HD - and also use them for gain/over drive. Also, the HD gives me about 3dB of gain between my guitar and the input to the GM. I like even my Clean channel to have a little hair, so the 3dB gain is great. But to be clear, on over half my patches I do not use solid state distortion - meaning I mostly rely on the GM's wonderful saturation.

The GM provides plentiful gain as every channel has Boost mode, but doesn't render all the voice. So I use H&K Tube Factor or MXR dyna comp on clean, chrunch channel without Boost mode to make an unique lead and to complement a feeling of lack the GM has. It is like making a specific metal sound by EQ'ing, although I'm not interested in the metal tone.

After my problem sorted out, I have a plan to buy a multi effector to enhance the variability of the voice.

Different flavors. As namklak pointed out, hitting the front end of an amp provides a cool push to the preamp. I'm a belt and suspenders kind of guy, so I have a pedalboard that can be run with or without the GM. It's got a Jetter Jet Drive, which is my favorite OD pedal...and it has TWO channels! You can run them independently or together. I've also started building pedals and am experimenting with different boost, OD, and fuzz circuits. The amps takes them all well.

    hi

i mailnyplay direct in the GM.
BUt last week, I changed again my preamp tubes to tame the gain and change a speaker to have in my 2*12 a celestion G12M and an eminence C Rex.
Based on that, with a 12AY7 as tube V1, I found the GM takes better the pedals. So I hit it with a Neo Fuzz Mi audio, a Riff shooter (a great french pedal), and a Xotic Ep booster.

    All these sound really well.

If I want a slight distortion with lots of gain to overdrive the Clean channel (pretending it's a Blue Jr), what OD do you guys recommend?

OP here. I had forgotten all about this thread Embarassed At the time I was using the crunch channel for my dirty rhythm and the lead channel for solos, and was more-or-less happy, but was wishing the gain was a little 'tighter' sounding, not quite so loose and spongy (not implying the crunch/lead channels are particularly loose/spongy). And so I was wondering if an OD pedal would tighten things up for me. I had been avoiding the ultra channel thinking it was out of my league, but one fateful day (about a year after buying the amp, embarrassingly) I tried the ultra channel and WOW it's exactly what I had been looking for. A more tight/modern sounding tone. Mind you I only have the gain at about 9:00, so it's quite far from being death metal. And then the icing on the cake was (finally, yes I'm a bit slow out of the gate) decreasing the wattage from 36w to 18w, allowing me to increase the master from 8:00-ish to 12:00-ish. My goodness what a difference! The beast is alive! Ha! To the point that I haven't even considered trying an OD pedal, I just don't see the need!

The GM's versatility is just amazing. All in all I am thankful that H&K put 4 separate and distinct 'voices' in this amp, because it allows us to find the ones that suit us best. It just took me a bit long to figure it out!

    Hi gravy db

I discovered and am loving the ultra channel (with low gain) as well

I'm still working with the fulltone ocd (got it yesterday) but my initial reactions are this is a keeper - it just LIFTS everything up it seems to give more headroom , a lot of beautiful harmonics and works best with a low gain setting (on both the amp and the pedal )

    I'll keep you updated

This is what surprised me about the Ultra channel. I had avoided it, assuming it had a death metal voice, but with the gain dialed back it's a great non-death crunch/solo option. I have the gain at about 8:00/9:00 for my crunch and about 10:00/11:00 for solos, and to my ear it's just a more 'modern' tone than the Crunch and Lead channels provide. Not more gain, as I have the gain turned down so low, but a different flavor of gain. Like I said before, I'm so glad H&K designed the amp this way, to give us a palette of such distinct colors to work with!
