    Where's HwyStar? Empty Where's HwyStar?

Post by bordonbert Fri Mar 18, 2016 6:39 pm

I've noticed the lack of recent contribution from our lounge lizard lethario HwyStar, (at least his avatar), so I got curious about it.  I looked all over the internet to catch up with him without success.  Until I caught the Time TRaveller's Wife recently and the penny dropped.  Looking again I was astounded to find this.  I don't know about you guys but I always had the impression that Hwy was quite a young sveldt chap, (at least from his avatar), but it doesn't seem that that can be the case if where I found him is to be believed.

So "Where's Hwy?"  Well that is one worried looking Hendrix I must say, and I can see why.

How are you going to talk your way out of this one HwyStar?  scratch

Well...  Jimmy was worried because his machine heads were pointed the wrong way!  And, he did not cut a notch off of the head stock of his Strat like "Mr. B" did.  Blackmore later confided that he did it just to throw people off about his sound.  He had/has a sick sense of humor IMO.  A lot of the sound comes from the player not always the axe/amp.

I'm here, just hiding behind a new Kawai MP11 piano.  Great action, good sounds and in itself, a full time job to play.

Besides having stomach surgery (Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication) and Bronchitis at the very same time, I get to have another hernia surgery in the very near future.  While not being able to really cough properly with my surgery, a hernia surgery that I had performed 35 years ago flared back up and will now necessitate another surgery.  I was so close to being healthy too.  Soon...  The beat goes on.

Well I reckon you know so much about what made JH tick it has to be unhealthy!  The term "stalker" springs to mind.  Especially when I came across this one....

    Where's HwyStar? Hendri10

You can see the tension in Jimi's back when he saw you out there. Again! You thought you'd get away with it that time and in truth you were better hidden but you know what they say, "be sure and your sins will find you out". Razz

I am, stalking Jimmy...  The black and white shot is far better.  Did you use a Sony A6000 on that shot?

My name is Joe, and I have a gun in my hand.  pirat

Shocked Errm - too much information - would you like to rephrase that Joe? Embarassed

Or did we just catch you at an inopportune time? Suspect

That is my favorite line of all of Jimi's songs. Say Hey Joe! What ya doing with that gun in your hand?

It is so descriptive with the least amount of words. I don't even know if the lyrics or song was written by Jimi? Sorry to say I never played any of his music nor learned a single song of his. My studies started right after him.

There's a bit of conjecture about this HwyStar.  I've always known it wasn't a Hendrix original and had always thought it was a "traditional" which had been around for a while, as was claimed by Tim Rose.  But the word online is that the writing of it was claimed by a pair of folk singers in 1956, Billy Roberts and Len Partridge ( who Question ).  You can find it in Whackypedia if you want to know more.  It's kind of a disappointment to find it's fairly modern, but it doesn't take away from the Hendrix version which is also one of my favourite tracks of his.  It's simple, it's raw, it works on a few different levels, it speaks to you direct.  Hendrix often gets criticised for being unpredictable but this song is one which really suits his rough style.  Some of his later album tracks are a tad sterile in comparison for my taste.

EDIT:  If you're a dyed in the wool Hendrix fan and you haven't come across this, it may be interesting:  Hendrix Albert Hall, 1969

I also was not sure if Jimi did this as a cover. Anyway you slice it: the lyrics Rawk! And Jimi is "the man" on this song.

    Thanks for the link BB!
