Grandmeister sound shuts off randomly Empty Grandmeister sound shuts off randomly

    Post by jmkurt14 Mon Apr 13, 2015 1:47 pm

Hey, everyone. My first post here!

So, two days ago I bought a Grandmeister 36. It was working great until last night, when I turned it on and after 5 minutes of playing, it made a "popping" sound and all volume went away. Usually letting it cool down solves the problem, but only for another 5 - 10 minutes of play. Rarely, switching channels will solve the problem.the tube status LEDs on the back all read good, I don't really know what else to check. Any advice is appreciated!

Bummer. What cab and impedance are you using? Do any of the TSC LEDs come on?

If the power tubes are reporting OK (TSC LEDs) then my first thought is either a slightly unseated preamp tube or a bad solder joint somewhere.

The second would be very difficult to find unless you have a lot of electronic experience.  PLEASE NOTE: Amps, even unplugged, can kill you if you don't know what you are doing.

However, if you're careful and somewhat handy, the preamp tubes can be re-seated without too much trouble.  This video explains how to access the tubes without voiding the warranty.

I would carefully remove and re-seat the 3 preamp tubes (the smaller ones).  I guess it's possible one of the tubes is going bad and fails when it reaches a certain amount of heat but that would be tough to determine without having extra tubes you can put into the amp to check.

My hunch, unfortunately, is that you have a bad solder joint somewhere that is expanding as the amp gets hotter then fails.  When the amp cools down, it contracts back to make enough contact to allow the amp to work again until it gets hot again.

Hope you get it worked out.  And I hope it's just a "wiggly" tube.

I agree with Jsims. It sounds like a bad solder joint. If you're still under warranty, contact H&K and let them deal with it. The Facebook page is a good way to get in touch. If you email them through the website, it's hit or miss.
