    H&K 112 Speaker Replacement

Post by hansen on Wed Jul 27, 2016 6:42 am

    Hi everyone,

Relatively new GM36 user here. Looking to replace the Celestion V30 in my H&K 112 cabinet as many of you suggest.

Do you think I should go for the Heritage G12M Greenback or regular G12M Greenback? Any major difference between the two? Any other suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Hakan

    Hi
No major differences between a G12m and the heritage release, that would justify the price gap.

The speaker choice depends on what you play as music type. For blues rock to hard rock the G12M is great, but alternatives like the Eminence Cannabis Rex is really good too. Especially if you want to tame the highs. See my other posts.

I agree with trb, I play 80s hardrock/metal covers and originals, and using the GM36 with two 112 cabs (using a Palmer PCABM Cabinet Combiner), an EVH 5150 III 112 Ivory with Celestion Heritage 30W which gives off a bright treble tone and a Blackstar HT Venue 112 with Celestion Seventy80 lots of bottom, so I have a balance in there. But I must say on this amp I prefer the Blackstar because of its bass throw, so if that's what you are looking for then I would go for a more modern Celestion speaker like the Seventy80 or one from the Marshall 412 I recently purchased, its a current model not vintage or anniversary line. Has Celestion G12s and it seriously rocks with the GM36. I had a guitar tech friend re-wrap it to classic Marshall White, so now it looks like one of the cabs that Randy Rhoads had. I will be switching over to the 412 for good and probably selling my two 112. I'll soon update my avatar with a more recent photo of the half stack!

Note- I am surprised however that the EVH cab doesn't quite pull it off alone with the GM36, since its typically paired with the EVH 5150 III line of amps heads which are definitely monsters of high gain. Also consider the guitars as well, especially pickups, humbuckers or single coil they play a roll in how your ultimate tone will be, there is a balance to everything thrown in, guitar wood, pickups, even picks and strings that shape a tone. As for me its modern Celestions all the way from now on!

Thanks. I mostly play hard rock and classic metal. Occasional Metallica is the hardest.

I assume the G12s you are talking about are regular greenbacks?

Nope, they are Celestion G12 made for Marshall MG Series which is what this cabinet line is from, I had it rewrapped by a guitar tech friend that does full restoration of guitars and amp repairs. I was sold on these to fit my musical taste, also of hard rock metal ala 80s, when I brought my GM36 to local guitar center and sam ash stores and tried the jubilee models, a few bigger evh 5150 iii than the 112 I have, and an orange 412 which were all very pricey cabinets. The dimensions, light weight and reasonable price tag added to my liking this one. I tried finding an original Marshall 412 white on ebay and reverb but they were either seriously beat up, seller was asking ridiculous prices, or for local pickup too far for me to get to. All in all it cost me $259.99 for the cab on musicians friend and total $185 for white tolex roll, glue, and casters on mojotone and labor.
