The clean channel sounds definitely better warmer cleaner very fenderish...but the od channels still don't sound good .Still too modern and a bit harsh.Don't know but for me even the triamp sounds harsh.!!!I haven't heard it on my own but the sound samples didn't impress me...i 'll wait for more reviews but back then, when i was reading reviews for the 36version ,noone ever stated that it sounds harsh etc....So only trust my ears

Am going to wait til it shows here in NY and play it alongside a decent Fender throughh the same speaker to compare the cleans. Agree on the harshness of the other channels...I did a side-by side with a Mesa Express and the latter was nasty in a better way...less harshness and tighter bass if that makes sense.

I'm going to try one out first. I want to hear how much better it sounds then the GM36 first. It would have to be a marked improvement for me to buy one. I have a GM36 and a Triamp MKII already. I want to hear in person if it really sounds like a Triamp. I'll figure it out then.

I started with a TM18 1x10 which I love, so I bought a GM36 but didn't like it nearly as much so sold it (even so it's a very impressive amp and the bet the deluxe version is cool). I'm very interested in the Deluxe 20 though, especially if they make a 1x10 combo version.

Sorry, but H&K haven't listened, learned and moved their philosophy on. From everything that I've heard of the newbie it's a metal amp full stop, just like the GM. I'm interested in modding the GM36 to put it right for my needs as I think it's a fine amp in other ways and I already have one on hand, but I'm not taking on another version in basically the same state. They should have given us both sides in the one amp, it can easily be done.

Ive heard good things about the GM-40 Dlx "Fendery cleans" and Blues Rock https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEk3cFJ5svs, and some good tones https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrdYA2QygaU tells me its a bit more than just a "metal amp full stop". However if I already had and was using a GrandMeister 36 sitting next to me I too would be hard pressed to buy another sorta like it.
But for those like me who do not own any H&K product yet, Im betting they sell a ton of um.

Sorry but that's just not what I hear, (I mean in demos when I actually listen to the amp being played, not what people tell me about it). I've heard the "Fendrey tones" thing too. I haven't heard any Fendery tones to speak of yet. And I'm always very wary about "things I hear" from people, they are generally generated by marketing departments or sales reps!
Stringwood demo - Straight into Lead with high gain, (as always). Why do reviewers all think that that is the selling point of the amp? Harsh "hashy" top end same as the GM36 out of the box. Clean channel, the GM's strength, sounds great but just as before - if you set the GM36 right. Over to Crunch and there we have it, the same grainy quality to the overdrive. No clean/Crunch crossover point in your playing depending on your picking strength. Lead is sharp with no lower mid and bass. Sure it maintains definition but at the expense of all tone, this actually is a channel without any tone to speak of - and off we go into the metal chugg! And not even a mention of the Ultra, mind you, no need, the Lead covered it. How much more "ultra" could you get?
Musicdata demo - Straight into the clean passage that all metal players think they have to do to show they have taste, good sound, as I said it's the strength of the GMs. On to the Crunch channel and there it is, the strident in your face top end blanketing any real gut crunch in the lower middle. And with Boost it just gets flesh shreddingly rougher. Lead is just a sharp rough twang with no body and so to the shredding section on Ultra which surprisingly fills out in the lower end but with so much distortion that any sense of subtlety is gone.
No, it's "Emperor's New Clothes" syndrome to me. People are hearing what they want to hear and not shutting their eyes and just using their ears - objectively. I know there will be many like yourself who will see the GM40 as the way to get the sound you want and that's fine if it genuinely gives you that, but that really just makes my point. It may be a great metal amp but it's not consistently good for anything else but Country! Even a Marshall offers more range than these amps do as they stand. And H&K could have set it up to offer both quite easily, they had oodles of feedback from people saying exactly the same as I am, but they didn't take the leap.
Of course, now having seen how the amp is voiced and played with things a little, I can see where they backed off. And I can see why, they are aiming it to conquer a specific market. And that market isn't people playing music like me!

Thats ok and as always YMMV bordonbert, mine does. Myself I can hear some right nasty good things when the backed off, that I can not get with some of the "modelers" I own. Backed some more and there are some nice cleans in there.

+1000 in my humble opinion the new amp still sounds grainy and harsh i think it lacks good mids...musical mids. Its very sterile.I own a fender deluxe...come on .This is what a good clean-semi overdriven sound should be... organic, warmbordonbert wrote:Sorry but that's just not what I hear, (I mean in demos when I actually listen to the amp being played, not what people tell me about it). Im old enough not to be wet behind the influential ears and also realize its always nice to discuss differences of opinions and ideas, as this is what forums are for. That said, I also believe that this amp's tone is not the only thing sounding harsh here. As I said, YMMV as mine does and thats as it should be. Unlike you (and maybe many more) Im liking what Im hearing with this head so far, and BTW- my 1st fender amp was an original Bandmaster Reverb purchased back about 1969. Ive also had many more since that one, so I too know what Fender'ish tones are supposed to sound like Ignantios.

Sure Kemper and Helix. They both sound great to me, but there a certain (for lack of a better word) "gnarly" in a good way tone Im hearing and feeling with the GM-40 that I haven't heard and cant replicate yet with the other two mentioned.

The GMD40 has features that I am definitely in the market for.
Tubes. Lightweight. MIDI.
I have yet to play through one, and my ultimate purchase decision will rest on that.

Well I purchased, canceled, and then re purchased when Musicians Friend offered it new for $1056.00 a few days ago.
I will try to incorporate this amp with Helix, so that I can add stomps and wahs and rack effects before and after the preamp of this amp using the 4 cable method. It should sound just KILLER this way!
