MIDI controller with GM36? Empty MIDI controller with GM36?

Post by Ermine Mon Jul 26, 2021 3:09 am

Is anyone using a different MIDI controller than the FSM432 with their GM36? Want something much smaller for a small pedalboard set up. Looking at Morningstar and One Control products. Any info or insights appreciated.

Also would a different MIDI controller be able to switch channels on the amp or just scroll between MIDI presets?

    Thanks in advance!

Personally I always use the FSM432 as it is suited to the amp. It gives contrl in a simple way which needs no setup other than comms channel matching. After that I find everything is just switches in use. Mine sits across the front of my pedalboard which is fairly small and simple. Of course, just as you say, this doesn't suit your needs so get to grips with what you are looking for.

Any modern controller should be fine as long as it can send PC Program Change messages which change the presets on the amp, and can also be programmed to send CC Control Change messages to change any aspect you want such as the channel selection or any of the channels control settings. If you can set it up to do both then you have the ability to work with both presets and adjusting any of the controls individually. The first thing to remember if you aren't aware of it is, the presets are only stored on the amp not in the footpedal and the amp is simply told via a PC message which of its list to set itself up to.

This most likely won't be your chosen controller but have a look at this recent thread. It's not too long and it has a lot of background info which is common to your own needs ands which should help with explaining some things about the MIDI setup. Soleman MIDI Controller Advice

Anyone else able to add something specific to a good controller which does all we need?

Update on this - bought a Tech 21 MIDI Mouse and it's spot on. Only 100 quid, works like a charm. Simple and effective and great for a small pedalboard!

Excellent news Ermine, thanks for letting us know. Glad it worked out. It's one for people to keep in mind if they have this problem themselves.
